The US Senate has adopted a draft bill to increase unemployment benefits.

After a week of intense debate, Senate members have approved the listing of the bill which prolongs aid for those out of work and also gives them extended medical coverage until December 2010.

It also includes details of tax deductions for companies and smaller businesses, such as restaurants, to help them finance job creation initiatives.

There is also a tax cut to help families afford college tuition.

The bill was approved by 62 votes in favor to 36 against.

Last week an emergency bill to extend jobless benefits for 30 days was held up by Republican delaying tactics.

While Republican critics have said the bill will only deepen the US deficit by some 100 billion dollars, it will now go to the House of Representatives for a vote.
